Hilltop - The house, garden and inspiration for Beatrix Potter

I have wanted to visit Hilltop - the house, garden and inspiration for a Beatrix Potter for a long time and finally managed to do it yesterday.

Hilltop is an extraordinary house - the celebrated home of the much loved author, artist and conservationist, Beatrix Potter.

Our visit began with a walk through the village where Beatrix found much of her inspiration. Walking through the garden on the approach to the house, it was easy to imagine Beatrix's characters - the playful Tom Kitten or Jemima Puddleduck hunting for a place to lay her eggs.

Once inside the house, it was lovely to experience the traditional farmhouse and grander residence that Beatrix created. Virtually everything within the house are original belongings of the famous author. The house is dark and full of atmosphere, filled with her treasures and favourite things.

Following our visit we had lunch in the charming village of Hawkshead and also visited the Beatrix Potter Gallery - a lovely day out!

bram and pop

Meet Poppy and Bramble.

Spring has arrived, and these two certainly have a 'spring in their step'! Dad Bramble and Daughter Poppy do everything together, from playing around in the garden to going on long walks around the Farm's beautiful fields and tracks.

Expect to see these two having fun when you visit Red Hall Farm.

Our Poppy

This is Poppy, the baby of our three farm dogs.

Poppy is a Sprollie, her Mum is Meg, the Collie and Dad is Bramble the Springer Spaniel - they are literally one big happy family!!

Poppy is a cheeky pup and is often sitting outside the holiday cottages waiting for strokes and cuddles :-)

Watchtree Nature Reserve

Just 10 minutes drive from Red Hall Farm is a very special place that we would highly recommend - Watchtree Nature Reserve.

A nature reserve like no other!

Watchtree Nature Reserve is a 205 acre haven for wildlife and people. Featuring flower rich meadows, old and new woodland, miles of hedgerow and wetland habitats it is a place for everyone. Wildlife is perfectly at home here and there are abundant Brown Hares, the European protected Great crested Newt, numerous breeding birds, interesting moths, stunning butterflies, secretive bats and incredible dragonflies.  The nature reserve is situated within much of the former RAF Great Orton airfield (1942-53) and you can still spot airfield construction dates etched into the concrete by servicemen as you explore. The Nature reserve is easily identifiable from miles away by the wind turbines located here. More recently, this place was used during the Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 – and even today much of the  site underground is a complex network of drains, pumps and  containment walls. So, if you thought this was any ordinary nature reserve you could be forgiven.

Such a great place to visit.....

Had to share this fantastic place to visit - The Lakes Distilliery is only a 20 minute drive away.

We enjoyed a very interesting tour of the whiskey distilliery and a beautiful meal in the Bistro - really very, very good :-)

We would definately recommend this place - take a look - https://www.lakesdistillery.com/

Waxwing Sighting

These Waxwings have been seen regularly at the near-by village of Dalston during December.

Dozens of these waxwings seem to like their Dalston habitat for the Winter months, before they migrate back to Northern Europe in the Spring.

Beautiful location, very central (we visited Penrith, Carlisle, Gretna Green and Keswick).
The property has been converted to a high standard and beds were comfortable.
Lots of nice touches such as jam, eggs and cake upon arrival and Joanne even put the log burner on for us before we arrived so that the cottage was warmed up for us.
There is a lot of information from tourist areas locally, which is extremely helpful if you are not familiar with the area.
Lovely relaxing break, hope to visit again soon.
